When he is drunk he loves to see her cry
and tonight he is at his worst,
but the pain has built her a dam made of anger
that he no longer can cause tears to burst.
As he curses at her and calls her bad names,
her mind travels far back to the past.
She still remembers when she was his all
and it saddens her the love didn't last.
If he held a woman instead of the bottle,
she just might continue this fight,
but she has found no way to battle this whiskey
because it takes away her man every night.
The kids have grown older with eyes of their own
and it is time she finds them all a good life.
Leaving him will kill what is left of his soul,
as he grieves over them and his wife.
Her mind goes to things that cause love to end
and how spouses can turn love into hate.
The line is so thin they get across with ease,
then find themselves outside a locked gate.
